Carl,

Your earlier note on Jesus and shamanism and his reply (you didn't react to that yet) on Nic Paton's exploring text is very interesting:

Dear Carl,

Thanks for this.
I read a good and positive book by a Louvain professor/cultural anthropologist Valeer Neckebroeck on Shamanism.
Which book of Fox do you have in mind?

Have you read "Crystal & Cross Christians and New Age in Creative Dialogue" by Bruce Epperly? Bruce Epperly is a UCC minister who is also a Reiki practitioner and in this book he is giving a mostly positive picture of New Age ideas and how Christians and New Agers could learn from each other. This might be close to a good alternative to "Shamanic Christianity". Also, have you read "Inner Christianity" by Richard Smoley?

As I said in my review, I think the best bet would be to study Christian mysticism (which lives today in the contemplative and centering prayer movements), and concurrently study shamanism. Both are better learned as apprentices with teachers than from books. To the best of my knowledge, a really useful book on "shamanic Christianity" that truly honors both traditions has not yet been written.

Maria, thanks for your comment.

If Keeney's teaching is helping you to become a happier and better person, then that's wonderful, and please don't take this review as an attack on him personally — or, for that matter, on you or your experience. My review is strictly about the book.

I read this review and felt that I might add some food for thought.

I must tell you that there is no gentle teasing that can release one from the clutches of the "self-imposed prison of dour religiosity". I speak from experience.

What may come across to you as harsh could be the most loving treatment of all.

If a tree is weighed down by a dead branch, the loving thing to do is take a sharp tool and lob off the useless limb. It is momentarily very painful, but the subsequent relief is immeasurable.

As a student of Bradford Keeney, I have noticed that he is deeply loving and humble.

In demeaning your fellow human beings as "shamanic wannabes" and maintaining a dismissive tone, are you yourself demonstrating the most important of Christian qualities?
