Even if one learns the language that the original was written in, one cannot be sure that the social context of the writing or the numerous connotations of a word are conveyed exactly to one’s mind.

Ultimately I suppose one must strike a balance between the consensus of the Tradition and the instinct of one’s deepest soul. If we are all part of the Divine, and are cleansed of our instinct to turn away from the light of Divine Love, then our deepest soul should know which way to turn; and the consensus of various traditions (Christian and other) should be able to help us.

Reading translations often frustrates me. I tend to check translations against other translations, and if I have any knowledge of the original language, against the original. But in this case it’s really interesting that those translations were so similar! Because you looked so closely into these translation issues, this is an excellent review, and Teresa of Avila is someone I don’t know nearly enough about… another book to go on my reading list! Thanks for sharing this.
