Jumping in where fools fear to tread, I would like to respond to the book review: The Christian Right is Wrong

A few years back I joined The American Renaissance Alliance that was started by Marianne Williamson. We needed to get back to the basics of our founding fathers! The point that reeled me in was that most spirituality teachings separate the spiritual world and the physical world. That the liberals gave us the declaration of Independence and the conservatives gave us the Constitution, and that we need the best thinking from both "sides." The best way to have a spiritual influence on the physical world may be to pray for the folks that are actually in the trenches and on the battlefield. We cross from a position of spiritually as soon as we Join one "side" or the other. The spiritual position is actually above the battlefield praying for peace; urging for dialogue. Reminding the political combatants that we are more alike than different. Now we seem to be in an era where the people on the other "side" are worse than any common enemy. (That is to say, if you are a liberal, the right wing Christians are worse than the Islamic terrorists; if you are conservative, the liberals themselves are worse than global warming)

I believe that whatever our political bent, we want the same kind of world, the one promised us by Ike, Peace, Porsperity, and Progress and by JFK, the New Frontier. Our vision is of a land of peace and plenty - a land of liberty and freedoms of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. In general terms, anyway. Our political disagreements are about how to get there and who should pay for it.

It's scary to me that so many votes will be cast on the basis of hateful sound bytes and that the uproar of the hate on both sides will make many voters tune out altogether, not making the effort to find true issues in the political discussion.
