Ain’t that the truth! At the Abbey of which I used to be an Oblate only essential speech was allowed, and it was interesting how much speech was non-essential in the final analysis.

we get too hung up on silence as an ascetic practice
silence your thoughts and desires and maybe then one will find only the essential has place in life including words and speech
